چکیده

Energy-efficiency is becoming increasingly important for storage systems to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO). In this paper, we propose an energy saving policy named eRAID for conventional disk based RAID-1 systems using redundancy. In particular, we develop a dynamic performance control scheme with the help of a performance predictor based on queueing network theory. Moreover, we discuss alternative data layout schemes that are more energy-efficient than traditional disk mirroring. Experimental results show that eRAID can save up to 30% energy without violating predefined performance constraints.

eRAID: Conserving Energy in High Performance RAID Systems with Conventional Disks

Recently energy consumption becomes an ever critical concern for both low-end and high-end storage server and data centers. A majority of existing energy conservation solutions resort to multi-speed disks. However, current server systems are still built with conventional disks. In this paper, we propose an energy saving policy, eRAID, for conventional disk based RAID-1 systems. eRAID saves ener...

Exploiting redundancy to construct energy-efficient, high-performance RAIDs

Recent studies show that disk-based I/O subsystems account for a non-trivial portion of energy consumption in data-intensive environment such as storage servers and data centers. Previous powerefficient I/O solutions for a single disk drive or mobile computers cannot be applied to data-intensive environment where the I/O load is much more intensive. Current solutions seek help from multi-speed ...

The Case for Massive Arrays of Idle Disks (MAID)

The declining costs of commodity disk drives is rapidly changing the economics of deploying large amounts of on-line storage. Conventional mass storage systems typically use high performance RAID clusters as a disk cache, often with a file system interface. The disk cache is backed by tape libraries which serve as the final repository for data. In mass storage systems where performance is an is...

No More Energy-Performance Trade-Off: A New Data Placement Strategy for RAID-Structured Storage Systems

Many real-world applications like Video-On-Demand (VOD) and Web servers require prompt responses to access requests. However, with an explosive increase of data volume and the emerging of faster disks with higher power requirements, energy consumption of disk based storage systems has become a salient issue. To achieve energy-conservation and prompt responses simultaneously, in this paper we pr...

Interplay of energy and performance for disk arrays running transaction processing workloads

The growth of business enterprises and the emergence of the Internet as a medium for data processing has led to a proliferation of applications that are server-centric. The power dissipation of such servers has a major consequence not only on the costs and environmental concerns of power generation and delivery, but also on their reliability and on the design of cooling and packaging mechanisms...
